Tura's Week of Golf a great success

Popular local golfer Scott Deveril won the 36 hole RBS Morgans Tura Beach Open with a score of 155, edging out Cootamundra's Brent Lange on 156. Gary Cook claimed third spot on 158.

After a rather indifferent round of 81 in the opening round, which included a 5 and a 6 on two front nine par 3's, Deveril stormed home with a 34 over the last nine holes on Sunday to snatch victory. The turning point was his eagle 3 on the par 5 2nd hole (the 11th of his round) when he finally caught Cook, who double bogeyed the hole in a four shot swing.

Stan Ebbage won B grade on 177, while Greg Thompson kicked dust in the faces of his pursuers in Grade C, with a score of 182, winning both rounds off the stick. Overall, Thompson had a good week, with another win in the mid-week stableford competition.

Some five different competitions were decided in the Week of Golf, with players from as far as Canberra, Sydney and Melbourne. RBS Morgans representative Thompson waxed lyrical about the success of the week, "The course was in great condition, the weather was perfect, and the organisation was impeccable. In my ten years associated with this week, this has been the best one ever."

In the Tuesday stableford, Minh Nguyen (42), Greg Thompson (38) and John Biggs (41) claimed the three grade prizes.

The three Fleet musketeers and Ned O'Donovan lapped the field with a fine 53 in the Thursday Ambrose.

Fourball Best ball top placings, Paul Lewis (left) Graham Brown, professional Scott Tasker, Barb & Geoff Jensen Colin Slade and Justin Trethewey (49) just pipped out Peter Weire and Graham Brown (48) in the Friday stableford. Weire's birdie 2 on the 13th for three points, was promptly followed by Brown's birdie for an additional point, an example of the kind of good fortune one needs to win a top prize in a heavily contested field.
